We were all very excited about this. Although we had individually been to
workshops before, this was the first workshop that we were going to as a
group. Akantha was unable to come and dance, but the rest of us were geared
up for it, including the sultan. I came down with pharyngitis earlier in the
week and was on antibiotics and still was excited about this event. We
planned to go to the Hafla and drum class on Friday, all attend the
workshops Saturday and dance at the show, and then two of us were going to
the classes on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Atlanta weather conspired against
us. On the internet and the radio on the way up to the event Friday
afternoon there were impending forecasts of the severe ice storm that was
going to hit Atlanta, that people should stay home, etc... So, we decide to
play it safe, listen to the news and head straight to Griffon, to Ame's
parent's house, where we had planned on staying. Later we would find out
that the Hafla and drum class had gone on anyways. Saturday we get up early
and get everything packed up to head out. It is a beautiful winter
wonderland outside. Great for playing and taking pictures, not so great for
driving. We check the news, con website, email, and mailing lists and there
is no notice that the event has been canceled. We attempt to call the
contact number listed several times and end up leaving a message.
Registration is set to start at 9:00 am, so we decide to head out to have
plenty of time to drive as safe as possible. The drive to the con site was
slow and thankfully, mostly uneventful. We saw several wrecks and even made
a game of guessing what color car the first car was going to be that we saw
in a wreck. (It was silver, I won.) At about 8:45 am we receive a call from
Ame's mother who had received a call from the woman running the con saying
that the event had been canceled and that we should've listened to the news.
So, we turn around, disappointed and discouraged. We milled about the house
for the day and decided whether or not to go back home. As I didn't drive, I
went with the group decision to stay until Sunday. Sunday I wake up feeling
worse and with a fever despite my antibiotics. We were all pretty ready to
head home and see our families we hadn't seen all weekend and get ready for
work we all had early the next morning. The performance was moved to later
Sunday afternoon, but this would've put us getting home entirely too late as
we had a looong drive home to South Carolina. I for one get up at 5am on
weekdays and needed to get home and spend at least a little bit of time with
husband before bedtime and I'm sure the rest of the girls were looking
forward to seeing their kids. :D So, all in all, no dancing for us at
Tribalcon, or as its being referred to IceCon 2005.
